Venus as a Boy
My practice exists as a vessel for transformation, creating space for intimate self-exploration while inviting viewers to participate in broader, collective dialogues. This piece delves into questions of gender and identity, informed by my experience as a non-binary person navigating the intersections of culture and selfhood.
"Venus as a Boy," titled after Björk’s song, examines how gendered expectations are internalized and reified, particularly in Latinx cultures. Masculinity is traditionally framed within the binaries of aggression and power, where the feminine is often equated with passivity and complacency. This project offers an exploration of gender fluidity—an act of transcendence beyond the masculine and feminine.
The work seeks to reframe beauty, not as something bound by gendered definitions, but as a phenomenon that exists in the liminal spaces between. It proposes a reimagining of identity, one that embraces the fluidity of existence, where self-expression is not constrained by binary distinctions but celebrated in its multiplicity.
